Diabetes MellitusDiabetes Mellitus is one of the most common yet most misunderstood diseases today.  A lot of the reasons behind this is that new facts and breakthroughs become known.  So what is Diabetes Mellitus? Diabetes Mellitus are several disorders of the metabolism caused by Hyperglycemia.  Diabetes Mellitus diagnosis is easy since the disease is common.  However before a doctor can give a proper diagnosis, they first need to know which type of Diabetes Mellitus the person has.

People tend to view Diabetes Mellitus as one large disease when in reality it is two smaller diseases.  A Diabetes Mellitus diagnosis would indicate that a person has either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.  So what is the difference between the two types of Diabetes Mellitus diagnosis?  If a person were to be diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, they would more than likely have contracted the disease before 25, versus Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, which can strike a person later in life.  Other factors to consider are that most people who receive a Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus diagnosis will be Caucasians of both sexes as well as being at or under the age of 25.  In contrast, those who would be more likely to receive a Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus diagnosis would be older women who would have the following characteristics:

  • A family history of Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Be of Black, Hispanic, or Native American descent
